From 1977 until 2008 Dr. Maris has consulted on about 195 forensic cases (53% for the Plaintiff and 47 % for the Defendant, including both civil and criminal cases.  His typical work week involves: (1) consulting (22hrs/44%) (2) research/writing (2hrs/3%), (3) teaching (16hrs/32%), (4) administration (2hrs/3%), and (5) service (inc. patient care) (8hrs/16%), for a total of 50 hours. At this time he has been just deposed ca. 46 times (most cases are settled or just require a written report); deposed and/or trial testimony 30 times).  He has testified in 34 states (30 times in SC, 13 in NC, 10 in GA, 10 in FL, 6 in TX, etc.) and 4 foreign countries (viz., Egypt, France, Yugoslavia, and Canada).  His consulting income is about 44% of his time & 56% of his income. He teaches full time in the medical school at the University of South Carolina and undergraduate arts and sciences (two courses per semester and two eight hour days, plus resident supervision and grand rounds; one course on “Suicide Assessment and Prevention” and the other on “Introduction to Psychiatry (including diagnosis and pharmacologic treatment)”).
