From 1977 until 2011, Dr. Maris has consulted on about 230 forensic cases (51% for the Plaintiff and 49 % for the Defendant, including both civil and criminal cases.  His typical work week involves: (1) consulting (22hrs/44%) (2) research/writing (2hrs/3%), (3) teaching (16hrs/32%), (4) administration (2hrs/3%), and (5) service (inc. patient care) (8hrs/16%), for a total of 50 hours. At this time he has been just deposed ca. 48 times (most cases are settled or just require a written report); deposed and/or trial testimony 35 times).  He has testified in 34 states (30 times in SC, 13 in NC, 10 in GA, 10 in FL, 6 in TX, etc.) and 4 foreign countries (viz., Egypt, France, Yugoslavia, and Canada).  His consulting income is about 44% of his time & 56% of his income. He teaches part-time in the medical school at the University of South Carolina and undergraduate arts and sciences (plus resident supervision and grand rounds; one course on “Suicide Assessment and Prevention” and the other on “Introduction to Psychiatry (including diagnosis and pharmacologic treatment)”).
